There's a new addition to the Flagler Beach Fire Department, and he has four legs.

A dog has always kept watch at Station No. 1, but it's a statue of a Dalmatian — and it isn't exactly a man's best friend.

The fire department's newest member is a tad friendlier.

Gibbs, a 7-year-old hound mix, has been at the Flagler Humane Society for some time. Flagler Beach Mayor Linda Provencher saw Gibbs at an adoption event recently and made it her priority to find a home for the dog.

That happened Thursday when Gibbs was adopted by the Flagler Beach Fire Department.

The adoption fee was already paid, and a number of Flagler Beach residents have stepped up to provide food and cover other pet-related expenses.

Capt. Bobby Pace, of the Flagler Beach Fire Department, said the dog will make a wonderful goodwill ambassador for the department.

"We do a career day every year, and the first question out of most all the kids' mouths is 'Do you have a dog at your station?'" Pace said. "Finally, we can tell them we do."

Pace said the agency won't have an issue taking care of Gibbs because the station is manned around the clock.
