Motorcycle units at the Flagler County Sheriff's Office will be out patrolling on new rides soon.

The Sheriff's Office recently purchased five new BMW R-1200 RT-P motorcycles for the traffic/motor unit. The change to the BMW motorcycles came after the Sheriff's Office was approaching the end of the lease period with Harley-Davidson.

Deputies said the BMW motorcycles are more fuel efficient, weigh less and have more effective brake systems and duel batteries.

The cost for the BMW, including all equipment, was $22,927.33 each.

"The Sheriff's Office was looking for a motorcycle that could perform to our expectations," Sheriff Jim Manfre said in a statement. "We were also looking to decrease maintenance costs and wanted a motorcycle that is durable."

The new motorcycles will be put into use this weekend.
