A Flagler County boy has been arrested after a knife was found in his backpack at school Tuesday.

The investigation began when a mother called the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office after she found a gun hidden in her son’s bedroom.

Deputies said they found a handgun inside a metal box along with sunglasses and a birth certificate.  Investigators said the gun had recently been reported stolen from a vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said the boy told his mother a classmate recently gave the gun to him.

Deputies went to Indian Trails Middle School and spoke with the boy, who refused to speak with school or law enforcement officials.

Investigators searched his belongings for safety reasons and found an 8-inch kitchen knife in his backpack.

“Due to the quick response of school officials and law enforcement, the student was located and the weapon was removed from campus,” said Sheriff James L. Manfre. “At this time, there is no indication that a gun was on campus and our investigation continues.”

The boy was arrested and charged with felony possession or display of a weapon on school property and misdemeanor violation of probation.  He was released to the Department of Juvenile Justice and placed on home detention supervision.
