Hundreds of kids went to the beach Saturday in Volusia County, but they weren't there to play in the sand or catch some waves.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission co-sponsored a program with Halifax Sport Fishing Club to teach the kids how to fish.

The event took place in Daytona Beach Shores.

"It's all about teaching conservation and getting kids away from the Xbox, getting them out, giving them something to do, get them out moving," said John Baller, of the Halifax Sport Fishing Club. "(We are) trying to teach them a hobby — something that we're really passionate about."

Anything that was caught was tossed back into the water.

The Halifax Sport Fishing Club also donated fishing rods to the kids who participated in the event.
