A Sumter County deputy was recognized for his heroism Tuesday at the state Capitol.

During a Cabinet meeting, Gov. Rick Scott awarded Cpl. Alan Hamilton with the Medal of Heroism.

Last year, Hamilton and his wife were at a movie theater in Wesley Chapel when an argument between two men escalated and one was shot.

Hamilton, who was not armed at the time, was able to disarm the suspect, secure evidence and direct emergency care to the victim.

“Cpl. Hamilton was willing to put his own life in danger in order to protect the lives of those around him, and did not hesitate to respond when his help was needed,” Scott said. “Florida is proud to be the home of many law enforcement heroes like Cpl. Alan Hamilton, and we will continue to recognize their courage and service to our communities.”

“Cpl. Hamilton's actions that day exemplify the finest traditions of the law enforcement profession and that of a Florida Deputy Sheriff. I am proud to have nominated him for this award and join all of Sumter County in recognizing Cpl. Hamilton’s service and bravery,” said Sumter County Sheriff William O. Farmer, Jr.
