Body cameras were rolling as two suspects led Daytona Beach police on a high-speed chase before crashing on I-95, causing major delays Tuesday morning, and then confessing to murder.

Police Chief Mike Chitwood said the driver and accused killer decided to come to Daytona Beach for spring break.

Chitwood said the pursuit started at the Anatloe Apartment complex, on Dunn Avenue, after a patrol officer ran the tag on a suspicious Jeep's South Carolina license plate early Tuesday morning.

"The tag number comes back that the vehicle was taken in a carjacking/murder from Columbia, South Carolina," the police chief said.

Chitwood said the suspects, who were sleeping inside the car, woke up and sped off, leading police on a chase up I-95. The Jeep crashed on the side of the road, causing backups for four miles on the interstate.

The police chief said SUV's passenger, 21-year-old Daequan Cole, was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center unconscious and in critical condition with head injuries. He was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver, 24-year-old Donald Harper, was captured while trying to hid inside a swampy marsh.

Chitwood said Harper confessed to killing a 41-year-old man in South Carolina, who was shot in the head, thrown from his own Jeep and left for dead Sunday.

"After he cleans it all up in South Carolina, he then decides that him and his little brother are gonna come to Daytona (Beach) because it's spring break," Chitwood said. "And they wander around the Seabreeze corridor."

Harper was charged with fleeing and eluding with disregard for safety.

"You may commit a crime somewhere else, but if you're coming here thinking you're going to hide, we're going to get you," Chitwood said.

South Carolina authorities were en route to Daytona Beach to interview the two suspects and possibly take them back.
