Cocoa Beach police are investigating a deadly scene after a car hits a pedestrian in Brevard County.

Investigators said they received the call just after 5 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses said a man in his late 40s was crossing North Atlantic Avenue (A1A) at North 3rd Street and was hit by a northbound vehicle. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver stayed on scene and was interviewed by police.

"I heard a loud thump, and I just thought somebody was chucking trash into the dumpster here and next thing I know you hear all the sirens and came out here and saw had happened," said David Wilson, a witness.

Northbound A1A was closed for several hours as police investigated. The lanes have since reopened.

Police have not released the driver or victim’s identities.
