Brevard County leaders are in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday as they are being honored for their efforts to restore beach habitats along the Space Coast.

Cocoa Beach is one of only four U.S. beaches this year being named a "Best Restored Beach."

Officials will be honored during a ceremony by the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association. Cocoa Beach and other beaches along the Space Coast were part of a $39 million sand restoration project after erosion ate away at the coast following Hurricane Sandy.

Tourism leaders are hopeful that the honors will help bring in more visitors to Brevard County.

Officials would also like to secure $5.4 million for another sand restoration project along the mid-section of the county’s shoreline.
