Police in Port Orange shot a man late Monday night after investigators say he opened fire on officers who responded to the home for a domestic violence call.

The Port Orange Police Department says officers and SWAT were called to a home on the 1200 block of Sparton Avenue around 11:35 p.m.

Investigators say 56 year old Howard Button III came out of the home and opened fire on the officers, re-loaded his revolver and started firing again. Officers fired back hitting Button.

He was transported to Halifax Medical Center where he is in critical condition.

The officers were not injured.

"It's extremely dangerous anytime an officer has a weapon pointed at them they need to react with the necessary force to neutralize the subject," said Port Orange Police Officer John Jakovonko.

The officers involved in the shooting have been place on administrative leave.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting which is standard procedure in officer involved shootings.
