Black Friday isn’t just popular with shoppers -- it’s also a prime day for thieves.

It might not be on the top of your mind as you zip through your shopping list, but experts say that after gifts are purchased, shoppers need to be mindful.

“There are groups out there that target shoppers," said Lt. Mike Crabb with the Orange County Sheriffs Office. “Always, always lock your car.”

Crabb also suggested other safe habits, such as keeping items in the car trunk and being mindful of your surroundings.

Deputies said that throwing out unwanted boxes on your curb may attract thieves as well.

“It’s just easy prey for a criminal," Crabb said. "They drive by. Now, they know (you) have a 60-inch, brand-new TV sitting inside their house.”

This year, Orange County deputies have teamed up with Kissimmee Police and Orlando Recycles to put “burglar boxes” -- dumpsters -- throughout Orange and Osceola counties, allowing residents a place to ditch cardboard boxes.

“[It] takes an element away from the criminals who are looking for those kinds of items as they troll through the neighborhoods," Crabb said. “We're just trying to prevent crime and people being victimized.”

This is the third year that the Orange County Sheriffs Office is doing the Burgular Box campaign, with dumpsters donated by Orlando Recycles. The bins will be out through the end of the year.
