A woman on a bicycle was hit and killed by a car in Altamonte Springs Thursday.

Police said the 69-year-old woman had locked herself out of her car and borrowed her grandson's bike to get a second set of keys.

Police said the woman lost control of the bike and went into traffic. She collided head-on with a car near the intersection of State Road 434 and Sand Lake Road.

“The bike possibly did not have brakes, but again that will be part of the investigation and of course play a key role here tonight," said Lt. Robert Pelton with Altamonte Springs Police. "If it did not, it could possibly explain why she was coasting down the driveway and appeared not to stop.”

Another vehicle then crashed into the car that struck her.

Residents who live nearby say the intersection is dangerous.

“I’ve seen multiple kids almost get hit here,” said Kayla Ouderkirk.

Ouderkirk also says motorists drive too fast, sometimes failing to pay attention to pedestrians.

“Nobody really thinks it's all that dangerous because you would think with all of those different schools in the area people would be more careful," she said. "But I feel like everyone rushes to try and make the light.”

However, in Thursday’s deadly collision, police say the driver was not at fault and a citation will not be issued.

The woman has been identified, but police are waiting to release her name until her family has been notified.
