The state prosecutor's office says it has dismissed the molestation charges filed against the executive director for the American Muslim Youth Leadership Council in Osceola County.

Imam Helmi Motasim Agha, also known as Imam Abufarah, was arrested March 11 and charged with 12 counts of lewd and lascivious molestation after a teenager told deputies he inappropriately touched her several times while the two were alone.

On Wednesday, the State Attorney said all charges have been dismissed following their investigation and a series of depositions.  Prosecutors said they discovered the victim had given several inconsistent statements and the descriptions she gave investigators appeared to be similar to a story she had downloaded from the Internet

The State Attorney's office said "We need proof beyond and to the exclusion of every reasonable doubt to prosecute, and we just did not have that in this case."

"I'm thankful that they looked at the facts of this case and then came upon the conclusion of dropping these charges which could have possibly carried me spending the rest of my life behind bars for something I didn't do," Agha said Wednesday.

Agha, an immigrant from Saudi Arabia, moved to Central Florida about four years ago.
