The latest Quinnipiac University swing state poll shows close to 90 percent of Florida voters would support legalizing medical marijuana, a positive sign for supporters hoping to get a new amendment on the 2016 ballot.

Of the 1,173 registered Florida voters polled from Sept. 25 – Oct. 5, a large majority, 87 percent, said they supported making marijuana legal for medical purposes as prescribed by a doctor.

Just over half, 51 percent, supported legalizing "recreational" marijuana for personal use. However, only 7 percent said they would definitely use pot if it was legalized, and another 19 percent would "probably use" it. In contrast, 65 percent said they definitely would not use marijuana.

The Quinnipiac poll asked similar questions to voters in the swing states of Ohio and Pennsylvania and received similar results. In both states, 90 percent said they would support medical marijuana.
