An Osceola County husband and wife are under arrest after deputies say they abused his mother who is now in critical condition.

The Osceola County Sheriff's Office said the investigation began in September when deputies were called to a temporary medical rehabilitation center in Kissimmee regarding an 81-year old woman who was recovering.

Investigators said the victim told them she had fallen in her bedroom and asked her son, 56-year-old Raymond Sutherland, on several occasions for assistance. She told deputies she lost consciousness and when she woke up, she was lying on the floor in a pool of blood.

The victim told deputies that after some time her son called for medical assistance and she was taken to the hospital where doctors told detectives her injuries were not consistent with a fall, but instead appeared to be from abuse.

Detectives spoke with Sutherland who they say did not admit to harming his mother, but said he couldn't remember because he takes medication that causes him to black out.

Investigators then interviewed Sutherland and his wife, 54-year-old Debbie Sutherland, regarding the care of the victim and determined they both physically abused her.

On Monday they were both arrested and Raymond was charged with battery on a person over 65 years old, aggravated battery on a person over 65 years old, aggravated abuse of an elderly person and neglect of an elderly person with great harm. Debbie was charged with battery on a person over 65 years old.

Both suspects were booked into the Osceola County Jail.

The Sheriff’s Office said the victim is in critical condition and the investigation is ongoing.
