An arrest has been made in connection to the hit-and-run crash in Orange County last week that injured two young children, police said.

Lastevie V. Howard, 40, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving personal injury and reckless driving with great bodily harm.

The crash was reported just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at North Clarke and Silver Star roads, in Ocoee.

Two children, one boy and one girl, were riding their bikes when they were struck by a black SUV "at a high rate of speed," police said.

The girl, 10-year-old Aubrey Clark, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. She was briefly upgraded to stable condition last weekend, but her condition has since worsened. She remains in critical condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, in Orlando.

For the last two weeks, family members have spent hours by Aubrey Clark's bedside and have started to contemplate long-term care options because of severe brain damage the girl sustained during the crash.

Aubrey Clark's family members declined to comment on Howard's arrest.

The boy was listed in stable condition after the incident, police said. He suffered minor injuries.

"The community is obviously upset," said Lt Brad Dreasher, of the Ocoee Police Department. "These are two kids that were on a sidewalk doing what they were supposed to do."

Dreasher said investigators had to make sure they had enough evidence to prove in court the accident was Howard's fault.

An arrest came 10 days after the crash.

Added Dreasher: "Was the car working properly? We had to interview a lot of witnesses. 911 calls in the area to see who called 911 to identify did he actually try to call for help, did he not. We looked at the red light camera at that location to find out where his vehicle went and things like that."

The two-week-long investigation also centered on being able to prove in court that Howard left the scene of the crash.

"There are people there that they say he obviously fled without stopping and helping, but we also have him on the camera, driving away from the intersection," Dreasher said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Ocoee Police Department at 407-905-3160 or Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
