With just days until as many as 2,000 workers begin rebuilding a 21-mile stretch of I-4, searching for an alternative route or mode of transportation may be an important discussion to have.

Motorists who use the roadway as a part of their daily commute can expect drive times to get longer — and tempers to get shorter — during the six-year I-4 Ultimate improvement project.

The Florida Department of Transportation has launched a project called "reThink Your Commute," designed to get businesses and individuals to look at all of the commuting options in Orlando.

Orlando design firm HDR Inc. is one of the companies working on the I-4 Ultimate project, but the company has been helping their own employees avoid commuter nightmares for years.

In addition to SunRail and LYNX, HDR has encouraged employees to telecommute — that is, work from home — or even bike to work, providing lockers and a shower as a convenience.
