It's hard to miss if you're driving around Cocoa. Soon the 156-foot-tall steel tank, part of the city's water distribution system, will look shiny and new.

The elevated water tank was built in 1957 but really stood out when the city of Cocoa allowed a resident to paint a huge American flag on it in 1976, the country's bicentennial year.

In 1991 after enduring rust and corrosion from the salty, sea air, a total renovation took place with the flag design being replicated.

The current renovation will once again strip all the paint, then re-paint the tank, coating it with special materials to protect it.

The project costs $810,000 and will wrap up this Spring.
