A man and his child are safe Sunday after a fire destroyed much of their Volusia County home.
The homeowner, Daniel Nwankwo, was making chicken wings around 2 a.m. Sunday when he fell asleep while the last batch was cooking.
Nwankwo was able to get out of the house, but the fire was blocking him from getting inside his 7-year-old son's room.
The man's partner then broke the window to the child's room and was able to pull the boy out. Much of the home was destroyed, though.
"Well, everything is basically gone," Nwankwo said. "TVs, furniture — everything is gone."
The boy was treated for smoke inhalation, but everyone is expected to be OK, officials said.
