Winter Park was covered in pink Saturday night when more than 1,200 Central Floridians took a stand against breast cancer, literally.

The event was part of Pink Out Winter Park's Get a Leg Up on Breast Cancer event.

The priority of the event was to raise awareness for breast health, with everyone wearing pink shirts and playing the part of "flamingos" for an attempt at a Guinness World Record.

“We are so proud of the way the community came together this year for breast cancer awareness,” said Ken Bradley, mayor of Winter Park. “The flamingo has become the unofficial mascot of Pink Out and inspiration behind our world record attempt. Despite not reclaiming this achievement, we know we can continue to spread awareness for breast health in our community.”

Pink lights covered all of Park Avenue on Saturday, and will be sticking around throughout October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“This event serves as a great way to bring attention to the importance of screening mammograms. According to statistics, one in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime,” said Dr. Steven Dukes, Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Winter Park Memorial Hospital. “But the earlier the cancer is detected, the better the chances are for recovery. This is why it is so important to remind women of the importance of yearly screening mammograms and to help those in our community who do not have the resources to get one.”

This is Pink Out Winter Park's fourth year, and they have provided scholarship funds to more than 140 women to provide access to mammograms and further diagnostic testing for women in need. Out of the women helped via the scholarship funds, six have been diagnosed with breast cancer and gone on to receive treatment at the Florida Hospital.

Pink Out Winter Park will continue through the end of October and the community is encouraged to get involved by getting a mammogram, purchasing a Pink Out flamingo or donating to women in need. For just $10, a person receives one Pink Out flamingo to keep and another is added to the growing flock of flamingos around Winter Park. More than 35 Winter Park merchants are also participating in Pink Out in a variety of ways including decorating their store fronts, hosting breast health events or donating a portion of proceeds from designated items.
