Tourism leaders in Brevard County aren’t giving up on a plan to construct an iconic building to welcome visitors to the Space Coast.

It comes after commissioners said it would cost too much to build.

The Space Coast Office of Tourism wants something to catch drivers' eyes as they head south toward cities like Miami.

They came up with a futuristic cube tilted on its side, which is supposed to highlight the county’s space and high-tech sector.

They want to build it next to a rest stop on Interstate 95, just a few miles north of State Road 46 in Mims.

Construction was supposed to start this year, but the contractor said it will cost close to $3 million to build.

While tourism leaders would like to use tourism tax dollars to build it, county commissioners, who have the final say, expressed concern about its cost.

At Thursday’s Tourism Development Council meeting, members agreed to rebid the project, hoping it comes under $2 million to build.

The goal is to attract travelers on the busy interstate to come in, check out the welcome center and decide to spend more time in Brevard County.

Tourism leaders believe the new welcome center could generate millions of dollars for the county and area businesses.
