With warm temperatures sticking around, the waters around the Kennedy Space Center can glow at night.

In a remote corner of Merritt Island, folks gather to welcome autumn and hope to see a lingering summer visitor by kayak.

"We usually see them until the first cold snap, and that is usually mid-October," said Dee Maynard, a guide with A Day Away Kayak Tours.

A Day Away Kayak takes folks on the waters of the Space Coast well after dark for a fireworks show underwater.  Just hold on to your valuables.

Only after dark will the waters begin to glow.

"We were looking at a single-celled plankton called a dinoflagellate," Maynard said. “In a liter of water, we have between 500,000 to 700,000."

Seeing the microscopic phenomenon that Dee speaks of is something only the naked eye can behold.

"Any time the paddle would create a ripple in the water, it would light up, sorta like these glow sticks," said Mark Ingram, a kayaker from Orlando.

Rarely can you capture the glowing effect on film.

"It was beautiful," said Sarah Jackson from Orlando.

What’s not so beautiful is when a flying mullet lands in your boat.

"I had to try to scoop it with my oar and I did eventually, but it was after me screaming at all my friends making fun of me," said kayaker Claes Westring.

The evening kayak tours are so popular, you’ll want to make reservations since space fills up quickly.

Excursions are not held on evenings with a bright moon as the extra light dampens the glowing effect.
