There is now some extra help for people living with sickle cell, a blood disorder, in Volusia County.

The county's Community Assistance Program has set aside almost $31,000 for qualified children and community programs that provide sickle cell disease services.

Sickle cell is a blood disorder that reduces the amount of oxygen the blood cell carries to the lung and the rest of the body, and can raise the risk of infection.

Applicants should apply no later than Oct. 3.
