A controversial development project proposed for Sanford's Marina Island goes before city leaders tonight in Seminole County.

A developer wants to build, in part, an assisted living facility on the island. The project has some people concerned.

The developer is requesting the city rezone Sanford’s Marina Island, so it can build new shops, a hotel and the controversial assisted living facility.

The exact plans haven’t been made clear yet – but that’s supposed to happen at a city commission meeting tonight.

“The developer is going to come back in with some additional plans that he was asked to present, some mockups of what it’s going to look like, and some additional material that we haven’t seen,” said Mayor Jeff Triplett.

The city of Sanford owns the land, but is locked in a lease of more than 70 years with developer TFA IV.

Hundreds have signed a petition to stop the rezoning, saying there are better uses for the real estate along Sanford’s downtown waterfront instead of an assisted living facility.

We have reached out to the developer for comment, but have not received a reply.

The city commission previously rejected the project once.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. at City Hall, 300 N. Park Ave.
