A Volusia County man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after he choked his girlfriend and then poured gasoline on her and then tried to set her on fire, police said.

Anthony Van Buren, 46, and his girlfriend rented a room on Friday at a motel in Orange City.

Van Buren got upset with his girlfriend, according to a police report.

That's when he struck his girlfriend with a chair, tried to choke her and then poured gasoline all over her.

The woman was found by police "drenched in gasoline," the report states.

Van Buren, according to the police report, told his girlfriend that she was "going to pay for her sins."

The girlfriend distracted Van Buren and was able to escape, police said.

A warranted was issued for Van Buren's arrest. Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputies located Van Buren on Saturday at his Deltona home and took him into custody.

He was charged with attempted murder and false imprisonment. He was taken to the Volusia County Branch Jail. He has since bonded out.
