The hunt continues for an alligator that attacked and killed a 10-month-old pit bull Monday.

The attack happened at Eagle Nest Park in the Carver Shores neighborhood in west Orange County.

A trapper was out at the park Tuesday afternoon when he expected more gators to be active and easier to find.

The dog, whose name was King, was playing fetch. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the owner threw the stick into the water. The dog went to get it, and then the alligator pulled the dog under the water.

People in the area said they are now planning to keep their pets out of the water.

"We just (have) to coexist together," said James Jordan, who lives nearby. "Hopefully, the water will come back in. They'll stay where they are supposed to stay, and we'll stay where we are supposed to."

The gator is thought to be between 8 feet and 11 feet. An FWC trapper spent several hours trying to catch the gator Monday with no luck.

An FWC officer will remain in the area as the search continues.
