Hurricane Edouard briefly intensified into the first major hurricane of the season, but has since weakened.

The storm strengthened into a category 3 hurricane Tuesday morning, with winds of 115 mph.

The hurricane remains more than 450 miles east-southeast of Bermuda, and does not pose a threat to land.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Discussion and 48-hour outlook

At 11 p.m., the center of Hurricane Edouard was located near latitude 33.5 north, longitude 56.4 west. 

Edouard is moving toward the northeast near 17 mph and this motion is expected to continue with a further increase in forward speed Wednesday.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 90 mph with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast for the next 48 hours.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 185 miles.

The latest minimum central pressure reported by a NOAA hurricane hunter aircraft is 959 mb or 28.32 inches.

Hazards affecting land

Surf: Swells from Edouard will affect portions of the East Coast of the United States north of eastern Florida beginning on Wednesday. These swells will likely cause life-threatening rip current conditions along most of the United States East Coast for the next couple of days.
