A six-year-old is recovering after a dog bit her in Deland while she was waiting for the school bus.

Animal Control officers said the dog has attacked before and is now deemed dangerous.

Marina Mendez and her mother were waiting for the school bus when her father said the pit bull mix, name Precious, first attacked his wife, then went after his daughter.

Witnesses to the attack called 911.

"911 operator: Do you have an emergency?"

Caller: "Yes, we're right here on Oak Drive and State Road 11 and somebody's dog jumped the fence and bit this little girl on the butt."

"It first wanted to bite my wife, but she swatted him off with the child's backpack," said Marina's father, Eloy Mendez. "The dog then turned and attacked the girl."

Volusia County Animal Control officers arrived, and Marina and her mother pointed out "Precious" as their attacker.

Officers seized the dog and took it to Halifax Humane Society, where it is under quarantine because its rabies tags expired.

According to the dog's owner, Lynda Waddel, Precious did not bite Marina. She said the dog was chained to the fence at the time and that it has never attacked anyone before.

Neighbors who live near the school bus stop have confirmed that a dog fitting Precious's description has attacked other people in the past.

"Yeah, but she hasn't. No, never," Waddel said.

The animal control report even states the dog has bitten someone before. As a result, Precious has now been deemed dangerous.

Now Marina's father hopes Precious remains locked up, far away from his daughter and other children waiting at the bus stop.

Waddel saidshe wants her dog back, but realizes she will have to pay several hundred dollars to get her back.

Marina was well enough to attend school after the incident.
