Dozens of residents in Brevard County spent their Labor Day laboring in the hot sun to help revamp a historic playground in Cocoa Village.

One wheelbarrow at at time -- some 70 volunteers spent off time for a labor of love.

The goal -- put the finishing touches on Taylor Park in Cocoa Village, right on the Indian River.

"It's one of our heaviest traffic parks in the entire city," says Samantha Senger with the City of Cocoa.

More than $50,000 was raised -- including a $20,000 grant from KaBOOM, a national non-profit committed to helping create play spaces across the country.

The rest was raised by groups like Cocoa Main Street and through a $12,500 donation from Bank of America.

New playground equipment replaces the dated slides and swings.

All be used by the thousands who come to the area every year.

"It needed some sprucing up. And we did that. It's a great thing," says Cocoa Main Street President Tony Jones.

The revamped park is close to hear for the city's mayor, who played there as a child and said to see so many come out to help on a holiday means a lot.

"It lets you know how many people care about your community," says Cocoa Mayor Henry Parrish.

The park is now officially open to the public.
