A 17-year-old pilot on her first solo flight was forced to make a hard landing after she experienced engine trouble over Brevard County, officials said Wednesday.

The pilot was performing touch-and-go landings around 9:30 a.m., at the Valkaria Airport, which is located on Valkaria Road near U.S. 1.

She was having engine trouble, and she overshot the runway and flipped when she hit the fence surrounding airport.

The pilot was able to walk away from the scene, officials said. She suffered minor injuries but was taken to Palm Bay Hospital for treatment.

The plane is a rental. The flight originated out of Melbourne International Airport.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration on en route to the scene to conduct an investigation.
