Cars are being allowed on Volusia County beaches this Labor Day weekend, despite warnings of soft sand and high tides.

A Beach Safety spokeswoman told News 13 Saturday officials would be closing the beaches to driving around noon Sunday and Monday.

However, we received clarification Sunday morning the closures will only happen during high tide and in areas where soft sand is a problem.

The red flags, meanwhile, are flying along the coast, warning beachgoers of rip currents. Beach Safety reported 25 rescues Saturday.

Swimmers are urged to stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties.

Also, if you are caught in a rip current, don't panic and don't swim against the current.

Instead, stay calm, afloat and signal for help.
