Some high clouds and temperatures in the middle to low 70s started our Saturday. Those temperatures quickly warmed to around 90 degrees with heat index numbers around 100 degrees. We will remain hot and humid the rest of the day, but there will be a chance for some showers and storms to cool us down. Any storms that do develop could hold some heavy rain and drop over two inches in a short amount of time. Frequent lightning and gusty wind may also accompany some of the storms.

An isolated storm may linger past sunset. A few of the clouds will gradually clear through the overnight hours as temperatures drop into the middle 70s. An onshore flow may be able to push a stray shower inland along the coast, but most will be dry as we wake up on Sunday morning.

The forecast for Sunday will be similar to Saturday. We’ll start out with only a few clouds around and mainly dry conditions. There will be a chance for some showers and storms to fire up along the sea breeze for the afternoon and evening. High temperatures will be back in the low 90s inland to around 90 degrees along the coast. Heat index numbers will again be in the triple digits.

Labor Day will continue to hold a 40 percent chance for storms inland and a 30 percent chance along the coast with highs around 90 degrees. Not much will change with this pattern as we head toward mid-week. A disturbance by the end of the week may generate higher rain chances for the weekend.

In the tropics, we are watching Invest 99 in the northwest Caribbean Sea. There’s low potential for development over the next couple of days, but a slightly higher chance in the next 5 days. Whether this system develops or not, most models have it tracking toward the Yucatan Peninsula Sunday and into Sunday night. Aside from a few tropical waves, the Atlantic is quiet.
