Cristobal is now a powerful extratropical cyclone in the North Atlantic.

The third named storm of the season formed Sunday, Aug. 24 as it moved over the Bahamas.

11 a.m. — Cristobal becomes a powerful extratropical cyclone over the North Atlantic.

Watches and Warnings

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

Discussion and 48-hour outlook

At 11 a.m., the center of Post-tropical cyclone Cristobal was located near latitude 45.5 north, longitude 47.1 west. The Post-tropical cyclone is moving toward the northeast near 44 mph and this general motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected during the next day or two.

Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with higher gusts.  Some gradual weakening is forecast during the next 36 hours.  The Post-tropical cyclone is forecast merge with another low over the North Atlantic in a couple of days.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 310 miles.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 980 mb or 28.94 inches.

Hazards affecting land

Surf: Swells generated by Cristobal are affecting portions of the New England coast and the southern coast of Nova Scotia and Newfoundland during the next day or so. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
