The Canaveral Port Authority picked a developer today that will totally transform Port Canaveral.

The plan calls for restaurants, retail and entertainment; similar to what would you find at Downtown Disney and Universal CityWalk -- but in Brevard County.

Developers want these empty fields around Exploration Tower to be jammed packed with boardwalks, a concert venue, even a four-star hotel.

Sooner Investment and Collett will be behind that redesign and released concept images of what they want to transform the Cove area into.

The Canaveral Port Authority voted today to allow port staff to negotiate a contract with the developers.

If the contract is approved in October, Sooner-Collett would begin on the $80 million development.

They've already begun discussions with national retailers and restaurants.

The goal is to make the port a top Central Florida destination, not only for locals, but for the 4 million cruise passengers that pass through here every year.

"To bring something very unique to Brevard County, to bring some magic here, to make a Disney-style development up at the port that will be beneficial to everybody in Brevard County," said Jason Steele, Real Estate Consultants for Sooner Investments.

Developers are discussing using boardwalks, trolleys, even zip lines to connect the new Cove area to existing tenants, along the harbor.

The port CEO hopes that the first phase of the development will be open to the public by late 2016.
