Testimony began Tuesday morning in the trial of former Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority board member Scott Batterson, who was indicted in April.

Batterson faces charges of soliciting unlawful compensation and bribery.

The state alleges Batterson offered a $5 million toll agency contract to a consultant in exchange for the right to exert influence, possibly choosing subcontractors.

Batterson was indicted in April for allegedly holding secret meetings to vote out the authority's previous director. Batterson turned himself in that same day in Seminole County.

He posted bond, set at $2,800 a short time later.

Tuesday morning, the state called Expressway Authority Executive Deputy Director Joseph Berenis to the stand to talk about the process for awarding contracts, who said firms that submitted bids to win the contract can protest if they are not happy with the choice.

Batterson was indicted by a 15-member grand jury April 24 on three second-degree felony charges, one was recently dropped. The trial is expected to last about a week.
