A Flagler County cat is getting nationwide attention all over his reaction to a common item found in Florida.

Buddy the orange tabby can easily be tagged a scardey-cat. And that's just fine with Buddy's owner, Leah Lester of Palm Coast.

Buddy is a finalist for “The Friskies 2014.”

His odd reaction to a plain old flip-flop could net Lester $25,000 in prize money.

You can vote on Friskie's website through Sept. 8.

But the thing is, Buddy, who is 4 years old and a shelter rescue, shouldn't be alive.

According to Lester, Buddy was diagnosed with lyphoblastic leukemia and her vet, at the time, suggested putting the cat down.

Instead, Lester opted for an aggressive chemotherapy treatment and Buddy has beaten the odds.

A vote for Buddy, or any of the 11 other finalists, is good for 10 shelter partners across the country.

For every vote, Friskies donates a can of cat food to those shelters.
