For the last three months, things have been disappearing in Flagler Beach at an alarming rate.

Police have reports of nearly two-dozen stolen surf boards, paddle boards, kayaks and higher-end bikes.

Problem is, no one saw anything.

Detective Liz Williams has an idea of who they're dealing with.

“It seems like they're definitely professionals. This is, more than likely, their one means of income. And they have been very clever but not clever enough,” said Detective Williams.

It looks as though they steal the items in Flagler Beach, taking them from Flagler County to pawn shops in Volusia County where they turn them into cash.

But Williams thinks she's got the suspects and the stolen items all identified now.

In some cases, the victims didn't even know their items were missing for days, or even until the police told them.

In fact, there's still two kayaks and a surfboard Detective Williams has identified as being part of the stolen loot, but no one has reported the items stolen yet.

Police say 14-year-old Caleb Tier is one victim.

He admits, he had a part to play in having his board stolen, leaving it outside despite his parent's warning to put it away.

Caleb says on that day, all he wanted to do was surf.

“I went out one day, it was a big swell, probably about 4-6 foot, and I was going to go surfing and I go out and my board's missing,” said Caleb.

The board now sits in a Holly Hill pawn shop, being held for the police.

Caleb's free to go get it now, but he'll have to pay the pawn shop $35 to get his own board back.

But Caleb's dad is using this as a “teachable” moment.

“We could go and buy it out but he's going to do that. Because it is a life lesson,” said Caleb's father, Rob Tier.

For Detective Williams, the 20-year veteran knows people in this small, beach-side community value their recreation.

“When you can return somebody's kayak, or paddle board or bicycle, you know, something that they use to utilize decompressing, they're very, very appreciative.”

Detective Williams believes they could make arrests in these cases within the week.
