An investigation is underway after a fire destroyed a vacant oceanfront Volusia County home.

The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. Friday, at the two-story home on Ocean Shore Boulevard.

"They encountered fire below them in the basement," Ormond Beach Fire Chief Bob Mandarino said. "With that being an unsafe condition for them, of course, we pulled out. The fire had spread from the basement up to the attic due to the old construction of the home."

It took crews from Ormond Beach, Volusia County and Daytona Beach nearly four hours to extinguish the blaze.

Mandarino said the home did not have power and was deemed a total loss. The home's caretaker lives in a cottage next door, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom home was built in 1920, according to the Volusia County Property Appraiser's Office. An online realty website values the home at more than $1.5 million.

Mandarino said lightning did accompany storms that moved through Thursday evening. However, the cause remains under investigation.

The State Fire Marshal's Office will handle the investigation.

The fire comes two days after three suspicious fires were ruled arson in Daytona Beach.
