Central Floridians turned in over 800 guns in return for shoes or gift cards Thursday.

"Kicks for Guns" events took place throughout Central Florida. The events were started years ago to get unwanted guns off the streets.

Since starting 16 years ago, Kicks for Guns has removed 10,000 unwanted guns. Last year the program got 1,065 guns off the streets, 52 of them illegal or stolen.

People can turn in their guns, no questions asked, at 16 locations in Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola and Volusia counties. Depending on the location, people may get sneakers, gas cards, Walmart or Publix gift cards.

Unusual items for the day:

  • 2 Potato Launchers
  • 1 Pipe Bomb (blown up by Volusia Bomb team)
  • 1 Flare gun converted to shoot a shotgun shell
  • 2 Flare grenades and 2 smoke grenades
  • One of the stolen guns was reported stolen in 2002, Celina OH.
