Volusia County deputies arrested a mother for a driving under the influence with her 8-year-old child in the car at 3:30 a.m Friday morning.

Deputies responded to the area of 10th Street and S. Dixie Freeway for a report of blue Nissan SUV leaving the scene of a fight. Deputies located the suspect's vehicle and observed the driver running a stop sign, causing another vehicle to slam on the brakes to in order to avoid a crash.

The driver then attempted to turn traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

Deputies activated their emergency lights as the vehicle approached but the driver simply drove around the patrol car, continuing southbound on the S. Dixie Freeway. The driver failed to stop even after the deputy activated sirens on the patrol car.

The vehicle continued to 6th Street, where a New Smyrna Beach police unit was waiting in the turn lane and activated the patrol car's blue lights. According to the police report, the driver finally pulled over.

The responding deputy initiated contact with the driver, and immediately noticed a child in the passenger seat of the SUV. The deputy said the woman's speech was slurred and her breath smelled of alcohol.

When deputies asked if she had been drinking the suspect, Sonia Sirol, advised she had not. The responding deputy also noted Sirol's eyes were red, watery and glassy.

Other units arrived on the scene to care for the child, and the mother was asked to exit the vehicle to perform field sobriety tests.

According to deputies, Sirol was very unsteady on her feet, tripping twice and almost falling. At point, deputies say Sirol had to use the vehicle for support.

Deputies say Sirol exhibited all six clues for impairment.

When asked to perform the "walk and turn" test, deputies say Sirol could not stand in the starting position without holding her arms out for balance, and almost fell several times. She walked quickly, and none of her steps were heel-to-toe as she was advised by the deputies. Only two out of 10 steps were actually on the line, according to deputies.

The final sobriety test called for Sirol to stand on one leg. In four attempts, deputies say Sirol couldn't stand longer than four seconds.

Deputies say Sirol refused a breath test on two occasions. Her vehicle was towed, and she was arrested on DUI and child neglect charges.

While in a holding cell at the Volusia County Sheriff's Office, the woman began kicking the cell door and screaming. According to deputies, while Sirol was doing this, the child told her to shut up, and began to cover his ears with his hands.

The 8 year old told investigators that he had not eaten all day.

Sirol was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail. The child had no family to take custody, and was later turned over to the Department of Children and Families.
