A group of parents and grandparents spoke out at Monday’s Lake County School Board meeting in Tavares against a proposal to implement a new uniform dress code a week before the new school year begins.

The first day back at school in Lake County is Monday, August 18.

However, on Monday August 11, the Lake County School Board could vote on a proposal to implement school uniforms at Eustis Heights Elementary School.

The current proposal reads:

“The dress code will improve student behavior and will contribute to the students' safety and pride for the school. A student who has a feeling of security and one who is well-behaved will perform better.”

However, parents are not happy with the district and Eustis Heights Elementary, because they say they didn’t find out about the proposal until a few days ago, which was after they had already done back to school shopping for their children.

The school uniform proposal was pulled from Monday’s agenda but could be re-introduced at the next school board meeting in two weeks on August 11.

Until then, the uniform policy will be voluntary. However, if approved on August 11, the policy would go into effect a week before the school year begins.

If approved on August 25, the uniform dress code would go into effect after the school year has already begun.
