What was supposed to be a non-violent event to remember family and friends that passed away turned into a clash with Orlando Police.

Police used smoke canisters to disperse the crowd in the Parramore neighborhood after gunshots were fired.

A day later, residents are questioning why police used excessive measures to stop their celebration.

All is quite right now on Randall Street, but it was it crowded on Saturday night into Sunday morning.

And for police, it raised concerns about safety.

Orlando Police deployed canisters with white smoke to try and disperse the crowd.

There were about 1,000 out here, blocking traffic on the 900 block.

Police say the gathering wasn't permitted.

After a half hour of failing to get the crowd to disperse, Orlando Police, along with the Orange County Sheriff's Office put on protective gear.

Some were even on horses, trying to break up the crowd.

Residents say they hold an annual gathering to remember loved ones who've died.

They say police used excessive means to stop their celebration.

"We don't come out here and try to start no fights, no gun shooting, nothing like that, we just bring all the family members together from across the world, across the country, whoever wants to come, they can just come have fun, we aren't trying to hurt nobody," said James Morgan, resident.

"No arguments, no nothing, I guess they were just tired of us hanging out, having fun," added Vernita Pittman, resident.

But police say there were concerns about safety.

As they were trying to disperse the crowds, an unidentified man shot several rounds into the air.

The suspect was able to flee on foot.

That's when police decided to use non-chemical agents to get the crowd to scatter. It worked.

There were no injuries and no arrests.
