Ocala police are investigating a shooting that killed a teenager, as well as an apartment fire that followed their arrival to the crime scene.

The Ocala Police Department responded to a call just after 1:30 a.m. Friday morning in reference to a shooting at the Spring Manor Apartments in Ocala.

OPD says officers arrived within 30 seconds of the call being dispatched, and upon arrival, officers immediately noticed a male in front of an apartment building receiving first aid from a resident of the complex.

Police say the man had been shot, and was transported by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center.

The victim, who has now been identified as 19-year-old Jaire Burgess, was declared dead at 2:25 a.m.

While officers were still on the scene, they heard approximately five gunshots from the front of the complex, followed by the sound of cars speeding off.

Officers were unable to locate any suspects, or evidence of the shots fired.

Investigators believe an altercation occurred between Burgess and the suspect or suspects prior to the shooting.

While officers were speaking to witnesses, smoke began to pour out of a nearby apartment building. Flames were coming out of the roof of the building by the time officers were able to respond.

Officers were able to evacuate all residents from the building before the blaze could consume the building.

Ocala Fire Rescue was able to contain the fire, and no victims were found inside.

According to OFR, a building inspector has condemned the apartment building, and the fire is considered suspicious.

The Red Cross will be helping to assist the displaced residents.

Investigators say there is no information at this time that links the two incidents, however both are still actively being investigated.

If you have any information regarding the shooting, the suspects or the fire, you're asked to contact the Ocala Police Department.
