A rainy summer has taken its toll on Brevard County.

The onslaught of rain was just too much for two pipes underneath the Greenbriar Avenue Northwest canal crossing. The road washed out and collapsed.

The 3 to 4-month project will cost $100,000 for the city, which is struggling to keep up with road repairs.

Residents in the neighborhood will use a detour to get to Malabar Road.

The project was slated to be done next fiscal year because of the shape of the pipes, but now Public Works said it takes priority.

All of the rain has put a lot of stress on the city’s infrastructure.

“We’re in the process of sending inspectors out to all of our major pipe locations to make sure there are no other failures that occur," said Public Works Director Elia Twigg. "And in fact we’re looking at closing down another road for precaution, that could potentially be another pipe failure like this.”

Twigg said the location is on Waterbury Avenue in south Palm Bay.
