The humane society in Flagler County has learned that if the public doesn't come to them, they have to go to the public.

The Flagler Humane Society is always looking for ways to match pets with families who want them. And a weekend in Jacksonville proved to be pretty successful.

A team from the Palm Coast-based shelter transported animals to a pet adoption event at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds over the weekend. They came back with more empty crates than full ones — and that's good news.

In all, the Flagler Humane Society found homes for 45 dogs, 17 cats, three guinea pigs and two hamsters.

For the event itself — which included shelters from across the region — 1,165 animals were adopted.

The Flagler Humane Society continues to have an influx in cats — specifically older cats.

And so, for the rest of the summer, all adoption fees for cats older than 3 years old will be waived. That makes about 33 percent of the cats in the shelter available for the fee waiver.
