Several businesses in Winter Park are finding themselves with unwanted waterfront property after daily summer afternoon storms cause their businesses to flood.

Video taken Monday shows water flooding into Rick Kirpal’s day spa along Fairbanks Avenue in Winter Park. It's a common sight when quick summer storms drop a lot of rain all at once.

“Every time a car drives by waves of it just bash the side of the building here, it picks up all the mulch and debris and brings it all over the place, basically,” said Kirpal.

No curb in front of the plaza has been causing the water from flooded drains just up the street to seep into the businesses, creating a mess and costing the owners money.  Many times the water is as much as six to eight inches deep at the front doors.

The wood flooring of Pipe Planet, a business also in the plaza, had to be replaced with concrete because of the damage the floor sustained six weeks ago. The owners now place large boards out front, fastened with bolts to bricks, to prevent the water from pouring in.

The Florida Department of Transportation has been notified about the water woes and are looking at how to remedy the situation, even if it’s just temporarily.

“In the short term we can bring out a large vacuum truck to vacuum out any sort of obstructions, if there are some in those drains on either side,” said FDOT Spokesman Steve Olson.

In the meantime, business owners hope something is done quickly to avoid any further out-of-pocket costs and loss of customers. “It definitely needs to be taken care of because we’re losing money from this,” said Kirpal.

FDOT said after the vacuum trucks are brought out they may send a camera into the pipes to see if there is anything structurally that can be done to solve the problem.
