SunRail hasn’t been up a running a full year and people are already asking for more. Those pleas may be heard, though. The Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission is meeting Monday to discuss this issue.

Today, News 13 spoke with the man behind the effort to push leaders to expand.

“I know a woman who uses SunRail to get her cancer treatments at Florida Hospital,” says David Porter, leader of a petition to expand SunRail service.

It all adds up to what Porter, who started SunRailRiders.com, says is why SunRail operations should expand to late nights and weekends. Porter’s online petition started a week ago and has more than 1,600 signatures. He has the momentum but no clear idea of what the service he and others are asking for should look like.

Porter says, “Let’s consider everything. I mean, who says that the SunRail that runs on weekends will look at all like the SunRail that runs during the week”

At around a billion dollars to get up and running, expanding SunRail wouldn’t be cheap. Earlier, News 13 spoke with Seminole County Commissioner Bob Dallari who said if demand is there and it makes sense financially, the board may look at a possible expansion.

Although Porter only rides the commuter train twice a week, he said he would be willing to pay a little extra and thinks his online community of SunRail fans would do so too.

Porter adds, “We’re ecstatic that it’s here. And, I think they did a fantastic job launching SunRail, but you’ve got to do it all the way.”

A Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson says growing ridership peaks on Fridays.

The Central Florida Commuter Rail Commission is scheduled to talk about all of this Monday morning.

Porter says he’ll be there. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs are also expected to attend the meeting.

Right now, SunRail is operated by FDOT, but will eventually be handed over to county and city leaders, whom they say will ultimately make the decision on whether to expand the schedule.

Monday morning’s meeting will be held at the Metroplan Orlando along East Robinson Street in Orlando at 9:30 a.m.
