Your pastor or religious leader might be talking to you about having a healthy relationship.

It’s an effort being pushed by domestic violence advocates in Central Florida.

No Limit Ministries in Titusville is one of several faith-based organizations taking part in this new event.

Senior Pastor Anthony Davis knows the devastating effects of domestic violence.

"The call came at 2:30, 3 o’clock in the morning from her cousin saying Tonya has been hurt get down to ORMC,” saod Pastor Davis.

Pastor Davis said his worship leader Tonya Thomas, in 2006 was just days away from getting a divorce when her husband, Damon Thomas shot and killed her.

"To see someone who was standing and so vivacious and full of life and had just gotten a new job laying on a gurney lifeless, I didn’t know what to do there is no class in theology that that they give you that teaches you on what to do in those situations,” said Pastor Davis.

The situation changed this pastor’s outlook.

“It made me vastly aware that I needed to open my eyes and educate my church and make a proactive move for dealing with domestic violence in the church,” said Pastor Davis.

Leaders at Harbor House of Central Florida agree.

Right now they’re calling on religious leaders to sign up for an event called the Healthy Relationship Preach In.

During the first weekend in October they're asking religious leaders to preach about healthy relationships.

"A lot of times that’s the first person they turn to for support when they are being abused, and often times they say they need to forgive them and that is the wrong answer and that can actually get people, and has gotten people killed,” said domestic violence advocate Carol Wick.

Pastor Davis knows how painful it is to lose a member of his church to domestic violence.

"It’s not if domestic violence is in a church, it is how much do you have in your church,” said Davis.

Damon Thomas is currently serving a life sentence for killing his wife.

There are various religious leaders that have already signed up for the event.

A Buddhist monk, several Christian pastors, and leaders in the Islamic community have already signed up.
