In the northwest corner of Florida, you'll find a landmark known for its revelry. The legendary parties on the beach continue, but in a refined way just across the street in 2014.

On one side of Florida 292, across the Ole River, rest waterfront homes. On the other side of the river, you’ll find a house of another kind.

"It's not fancy," comments Devon Ruhde, visiting from Illinois.

Yet, all signs here point to something looking like a plywood castle.

"Word of mouth spread and people used to come here on vacation,” claims co-owner Patrick McCellan.

But, what is it? It's hard to define.

"If you say Flora-bama, they know what it is,” Devon believes.

Where the Florida sand meets the Alabama coast, you'll find a timeless bar turning 50 named Flora-Bama. And to celebrate Flora-Bama’s first five decades, a new sibling awaits across the street.

"We are kinda the little brother. We're right on the water at Ole River,” explains Chris Sherrill.

The Flora-Bama Yacht Club allows folks to kick-off their shoes and sink their teeth into outdoor, casual dining.

"The Flora-Bama was built on great bar food and we take that to the next level,” said Chris, who serves as executive chef and the diner’s manager.

The Hamburger Tuna Sandwich here is quickly becoming noteworthy.

"It's one of our most requested items,” Chris confirmed, adding the menu here is very different.

Chris is proud to carry on the tradition of the original Flora-Bama, but admits, the reputation of the party shack across the street is hard to shake off.

"It's been a struggle,” Chris said of the plywood icon hugging the Florida/Alabama state line. “A lot of times, people come over to the Yacht Club looking for the Flora-Bama experience, and we're a tad more refined over here. But it seems to work."

Flora-Bama is famous for its large parties, and the large hurricanes that have ripped it apart. Each time, the bar is put back together with whatever materials didn't blow or float away.

Diners across the street from the crude original should expect to find seating in a patio setting and table service. While there is a bar at the Yacht Club, visitors are encouraged to sit and relax, instead of mingle, twerk or sing.

"The Flora-Bama way we call it,” Chris concludes.
