It is lights, camera, action in Brevard County this week as a new movie is being filmed on the Space Coast.

But, it may be one of only a few movies to shoot in Florida this year after the Florida Legislature failed to approve some film incentives.

Filming got underway over the weekend on the 2015 film, "Martial Arts Kid," at Our Saviour Catholic School.

The movie's filmmakers would like to shoot more footage locally, but that's not going to happen because of a lack of state financial support, they said.

"I'm really excited to get started here," actor Matthew Ziff said. "It looks like a really cool place. It looks like it's going to be some good scenery for the film."

The film follows Robbie, a troubled teen who just lost his mom. He moves to Cocoa Beach, where his aunt and uncle teach martial arts to help channel his anger.

"It's a little bit dramatic, but it brings out the best in Robbie," actress Kathryn Newton said. "It kind of changes him, and we grow."

The independent film will only shoot in Brevard County for six days. Most of the shots will be exteriors.  The interior shots will be filmed back in Los Angeles.

"I think one of the big reasons we're not here for the whole film is because of the incentives," said Ryan Westheimer, co-producer for the movie. "Not being able to get that little extra. I mean, that's really what we need."

State lawmakers this year failed to provide financial incentives for moviemakers that film in Florida.

According to the Space Coast Film Commission, it cost the area a Tom Hanks movie.

"We've already lost some feature films that were going to come to the area," said Bonnie King, a member of the Space Coast Film Commission. "It's unfortunate."

The film commission said moviemaking not only brings jobs and money to the local area, but it also helps tourism.

"It's called filmed-induced tourism," King said. “People will see (the area). They'll say that looks like a nice play to go."

But King is grateful at least some of the movie is being filmed locally.

"Cocoa Beach plays a character in this independent film, and you can't ask for anything better than that," King said.

This week, filming will take place in Cocoa Beach, Port Canaveral, the Brevard Zoo and at the Melbourne International Airport.

Other states have film incentives, which make it tough for Florida to compete.

Martial arts actor Don "The Dragon Wilson" and his brother, James Wilson, who is a producer on the movie, are both from the area. They have enlisted about 75 extras from around the area to be in the movie.
