They operate under the radar, but can be key in helping keep people safe during storms -- especially hurricanes.

This weekend amateur radio operators will be showcasing their skills in Brevard County.

The 'hams,' as they are called, will be setting up their radio transmitters, receivers and transmitters to simulate emergency conditions.

The event is put on by the Platinum Coast Amateur Radio Society Operators from both the U.S. and Canada will be participating.

The 24-hour event runs from 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28 until 2 p.m. Sunday, June 29 at West Melbourne Community Park, 3000 Minton Road.
